por Patas Adoptions
As quickly as we can pick them
up from the beach, more animals are dumped and left at the mercy
of the elements. The wonderful Sandra goes to the beach daily to
give fresh food and water to the resident dogs at the beach and
to rescue new ones, especially puppies, that arrive far too regularly.
We do the best we can to get the adoptable dogs from the beach but
there is a great cost associated with this process. Once a dog or
cat is rescued from the beach the animal must remain in foster care,
a kennel, or a veterinarian’s office for
30 days before it can be transported off the island. Boarding fees
vary and foster homes are hard to come by. The animals must also
be given a health certificate by a veterinarian before they can
leave the island. That includes a full check-up by the vet, all
of their vaccinations (including rabies and bordetella), heartworm
testing (and treatment for heartworm if it is found), tests for
and removal of internal and external parasites (including mange),
spay or neuter, and any other tests or treatments the vet deems
necessary. Then they board a plane and are flown to the U.S., picked
up by volunteers there, and taken to a shelter or placed in a foster
home. The average for a dog or cat to be boarded for 30 days, receive
all necessary veterinary services, and be flown to the U.S. is $225.
You can help these animals by making a donation to us by clicking
the paypal button below or sending a check to us. Or, if you want
to adopt an animal, check out those that are in foster
care or that are up for adoption. You can adopt an available
animal and we will find a way to get it to you anywhere in the states.
You can email your interest to me at ginny@handsforpaws.org.
I have lots of questions for you because we want to make 100% certain
this would be the best placement for the animal. Our adoption fee
is $95 and that goes to help defray some of our rescue costs. We
also welcome those interested in fostering animals in Puerto Rico
or in Florida or volunteering to assist in transporting animals
to write to ginny@handsforpaws.org
as well.
