Horror in Puerto Rico - Please take action!
A true tragedy has occurred in Puerto Rico. About 30-50 dogs were rounded up and thrown of a bridge in Barcoleneta about 100 feet above a river bed. A resident of Barceloneta witnessed the City confiscate animals earlier this week from a number of public housing projects. The residents were told it was illegal to have family pets in the housing projects though that is not true. The task of removing the animals was given to a company called Animal Control Solutions run by Julio Diaz. A woman tracking the whole story found the truck from Animal Control Solutions and one of the workers was beating the dogs to daze them to get them into the truck. The workers then drove the half-dead dogs to the bridge and dumped them over. Most died but some survived and are crippled. It must have happened a couple of days ago because the neighbors in the area say the stench is horrible. About 5 managed to make it to the nearest home. The neighbor, Aida Garcia, said that she desperately needs food and a vet. As horrendous as this is, I believe it may be the "last straw" that finally brings the stateside animal welfare into this struggle. Please take a moment to call the Governor's and U.S. Representative's offices to tell them that you are outraged about this situation and that they MUST step up and take action for all animals in Puerto Rico. We will be working with PETA and travel agents in the U.S. to begin a full-frontal boycott on travel to Puerto Rico. This tactic was used a few years ago concerning horse slaughter in Mexico - travel agents refused to book any travel to or from Mexico. I don't think it took very long for the decreasing tourism dollars to force the Mexican officials into complying with the animal welfare demands. I'm discussing this with a local travel agent who was involved in that Mexico boycott and we will be moving forward with one against Puerto Rico. No one should travel for vacations or to see concerts or sports events or to compete in competitions or to attend conventions - DO NOT GIVE YOUR MONEY TO A COUNTRY/STATE THAT KNOWINGLY TURNS ITS BACK ON INNOCENT ANIMALS WITHIN ITS BORDERS.
