This is the Arecibo Animal Shelter

Have you ever been curious about why we consider the animal welfare status of Puerto Rico so horrendous? Here is your visual proof. This is the Arecibo Animal Control Center. Words cannot describe how horrible the situation is here. And this is why the citizens of Puerto Rico feel that their unwanted animals have a better chance of a good life by being dumped at the beach. The people know what the shelter conditions are abysmal. This is a government-run facility to care for animals!!! I received the photos and information from one of the people who is working so desperately to help the dogs at this "shelter". She describes the following:

* Money are coming in and the money are not being use for the animals. ( over $5,000.00 dollars) put in a special account not know who is spending it.
* dogs mix's female and male
* Big dogs mixed with pups and small dogs.
* Big dogs attacking little dogs for food
* No plate to feed all dogs
* Dogs have to sleep in puddles of water, urine and feces
* Food being wet when cleaning cages
* Food is fed on the floors
* Wetting dogs and food, when they clean cages.
* Puppies dying for being soaked to death.
* New born sleeping on wet and cold floors.
* Cat eating kittens and not being fed enough of food.
* No one is cleaning cat area 67 cats all mix in one area.
* They are not buying food. (food are only being supplies by animal lovers and the public)
* No vet care for sick animals.
* They don't even have a vet to visit site, the only use of vet is when they put dogs down at vet hospital
* No permits at shelter for use of operation.
* No cleaners are being use to disinfect area.
* No medication are given to animals
* Injured dogs are kept on site till they died.
* Dogs run over by cars are also kept in pain without vet care.
* Dogs up for adoption without being spayed or neutered.
* Hardly any DHLPPC and rabies vaccines are giving.
* No vet to give rabies vaccines
* Remember this is a strategy of political party of the mayor.

She states that "under the law this is bad case of neglect and abuse of the Mayor Lemuel Soto Santiago and employees". CAN ANYONE PLEASE HELP? They have too many dogs and no place to take them all. Please call at 787-879-2191 or 787-605-5621 or you may call the number below for information.

You know, if you're planning to sue, photos and testemonies like this would help your case tremendously.

This is an absolute disgrace. This has confirmed, there is absolutely NO WAY this mayor is remotely related to being a Christian. How greedy and power hungry does one have to be to allow this horror? The catholic churches need to step in. The Bishops' should be responsible for the welfare of God's creation down there! This is not right. I wish I had money because this problem would feel a major dent and there would be 50 foot St. Francis' statues around every corner on this island.

I just faxed a letter and this write up on the shelter to Luis Fortuno - here in DC at one of the Senate Office Buildings. The best way for us to help is to get the word out that this is what is going on and it needs to stop.

the outrage over this is valid and i am thankful to see you all "fired up" about this. i wish this were the only incident of animal cruelty on the island but sadly it's not. i'm so thankful to those on the island who are doing everything they can to fight these horrors. the problem is that the government on the island DOES NOT CARE. it's been shown time and again that on all levels, those who have the power to stop these abuses do nothing.

I was thinking the same thing. Does someone out there have the knowledge or know-how of how to get someone in the news involved?

Howard Stern's wife, Beth Ostrosky was on Rachael Ray's TV show this morning. She is a huge animal lover and the spokesperson for North Shore Animal League America. She talked about her passion to raise money for the homeless animals and gave her plea to adopt from your local animal shelter. If someone out there has the time to try and contact Beth, she may be able to help get the word out there. Especially if she saw those pictures and read about what is going on in this shelter in P.R. Howard is reportedly a big animal lover as well.

I emailed the Rachael Ray Show and the Howard Stern Show staff, hoping this information reaches Beth. If others do the same, maybe a staff member from one of these shows will make the effort to get this information where it needs to go.

One of the creators of the Simpsons is a HUGE ANIMAL LOVER - ESPECIALLY DOGS....anyone know how to get in touch with him? i'm sure he would get the ball rolling and help out.......Sam Simon is his name, i think. he has spent millions on adpoting from shelters and turning them into service dogs, among many other things i'm sure.......
