This handsome boy is Quijote (now called Pedro). He was rescued by Jessica Baretty at a Walmart in Puerto Rico with a badly broken leg and mange. He was in really bad shape as you can see from the photo. I tried to help Jessica with his rescue and to find placement for him with a rescue in Virginia. Things fell through with the original rescue person there but he landed on his very handsome feet and was adopted to a wonderful family who adores him and obviously treats him so very well. Thank you Jessica for saving him!
There was no way I could leave this little baby at the beach in this condition so Sandra took her to Dr. Reyes today. I will call him in the morning to get a prognosis on her. She looks pretty weak and there's a possibility she won't make it. But at least she'll have a full belly and love.
Can you believe this is the same dog!?!? Here is Scooby's before and after shots. He had terrible mange and just looked weak and sick when he was rescued. But look at this beautiful boy now! Thank you so much to Mary and Sabine for giving him a bright and happy future.
These guys were all dumped at the beach this weekend. I can't let that little mangy baby stay there with no help so I told Sandra to take him in to the vet tomorrow. We are very very much in debt right now so any donations at all will be greatly appreciated.
This beauty was rescued by Amigos de los Animales. Here is the posting from Liz' blog to give you the full story. If you can help with donations, go to the ADLA website.
Sam was rescued in an undisclosed location from a bad home. As you can see from the photos, he's in desperate need of fattening up, and he also has heartworm. Sam is a five-year-old dog, and while that's not a problem in finding him a home, he is going to take some time to recover.
From experience, I'd say he'll take about two months before he's ready to rock. Estimates for his care will be about $1K. He will need about eight weeks in boarding, and four of them just to fatten him up, and he will need to be treated for parasites and later undergo heartworm treatment, which will cost about $500 alone. He can't be treated for heartworm until his health and weight are stable.
If you can contribute to Sam's care, we would really appreciate it. Our bills are $3K (STILL!) at Dr. Ramos's, and cannot afford his care. Please help us to treat Sam (and help us with our bills, if you want) by going to the PayPal button on this blog, which is directly linked to the Amigos de los Animales bank account. You will receive a donation receipt that can be used next year this time for 2009 taxes.
Please help Sam get the care he needs and a 2nd chance at a great life! If you can pay, we'll do all the rest!
Miles, Brandon, and Tanya and the last four "mob" puppies are up for adoption at the Humane Society of the Treasure Coast in Palm City, Florida.
The seven newest puppies rescued from the beach are at Dr. Ramos' office in Puerto Nuevo and will be going to foster homes soon. Lannie, from that bunch, already has a place to go in Chicago when she's ready to fly.
Scooby is in foster care with Sabine and has just finished his treatment for demodex and is ready to travel when we have a flight.
Kathy and Mika are with Mary in Salinas. Kathy is still getting treatment for mange. Mika is ready to go but we are looking for placement for her - she is a pit bull mix and I want to be very careful about where she goes for adoption.
Spot and Gina are being fostered by Barbara in Carolina. Gina's puppies are being fostered by Nilsa and are doing great.
Stephanie, Riker, Meredith and Kass are all at Dr. Vasquez' office in Carolina. They are all ready to come to the states for adoption but we have nowhere to send them. Riker is heartworm positive so needs to be treated for that once he arrives here.
Betsy is in foster care with Liza in Guaynabo. She is going in next week to be spayed and get her last shots. Then she'll be travelling to Chicago where she already has a home!
Shane is up for adoption at H.A.L.O. shelter in Sebastian, Florida.
Ziggy is up for adoption and in foster care at my home in Port St. Lucie, Florida.
Alyssa is still up for adoption and is in boarding at The Contented Canine in Palm City, Florida.
Here's little Betsy with her fancy pink ENORMOUS cast. She's doing great in foster care and will be heading to her new home in Chicago in a couple of weeks.
We took part in the Equine Rescue and Adoption Foundation's annual Hoedown fundraiser at Caring Fields Sanctuary in Palm City, Florida. There were quite a few people and we sold a few bags of coffee, some t-shirts, and pet safety decals. Alyssa was there still looking for her perfect family and Barbi had Daisy and Sox there as well. No adoptions as of now but who knows what the telephone will bring this evening!
I just received a check today for $150 from a company at which one of our supporters works. It was a 100% matching donation so Melody's generous $150 donation turned into a whopping $300! Many companies give matching donations to tax-exempt charities so ask your human resource department if you can apply! It's a great way to stretch much-needed dollars even farther.
These 7 little ones were rescued from the beach yesterday and are safe at Dr. Ramos for now. We're still looking for foster homes for them and continue to need donations for the 25 dogs we have in foster or vet care.
Good fella's indeed! The four remaining "mob" puppies arrived today along with two others from another rescuer. All were in great condition even after a long flight and waiting period and are at the Humane Society of the Treasure Coast in Palm City, Florida and will be up for adoption soon. Thank you so much to Viviana, Nilsa, Maria, Bob, Sandra and all others who helped rescue these little angels.
The beautiful Alyssa is still up for adoption in Port St. Lucie, Florida. This beautiful girl with the soulful eyes has been in boarding for over 4 months now! There is absolutely nothing wrong with her. In fact, she's one of the sweetest and most loving dogs I've ever met. Alyssa is a cancer survivor - she lost a litter of puppies and went through chemotherapy all within the month after she was rescued. She is 40lbs and about 2-3 years old. She is gentle and loving and great with other dogs.
Remember little Ziggy - the boy with the horrendous matted hair that was named "Ziggy" for Ziggy Marley? I have this little stinker at my home in foster care. He is A GEM!!! However, he has definite needs for a forever home. He is aggressive with other male dogs (he isn't neutered yet, I'm hoping to do that this week) and has to be an only dog. Even preferably an only animal - he's okay with my cats but it's a fine line and I never feel 100% comfortable with him and the cats. He is a typical little dog in that he can get very overwhelmed and will snap at people. He's very smart since the two people he has snapped at are the managers for two different shelters I was hoping to leave him with! So he wasn't right for them so he's with me. He has a FANTASTIC personality! So sweet and playful - he'll play fetch all day long. And he loves to pull out every toy in the toy basket and scatter them around the house. He loves to snuggle up with me and get his belly rubbed. He's been fine with people who come into the house which is very good - I was worried about that with his snippy tendencies. He is perfect for a 1 or 2 adult home - no little kids for sure. Ziggy is young - 1, maybe 2 years old - and is up-to-date on all shots, heartworm negative and housetrained. He is a wonderful boy that is very excited about life!
We just received a generous donation from Elin with The Mutt Movement in Los Angeles - enough that we can take the 8 puppies at the beach to safety! But we need foster homes or boarding for them before we can move them from the beach. If anyone in Puerto Rico can foster even 1 of them for 3-4 weeks, we will take care of your expenses.
It's time to nominate the Animal Planet Hero of the Year. I think we can all agree that Sandra, who has been going to Dead Dog Beach for over 6 years to care for the dogs there, deserves praise for her efforts in saving animals. However, I just found out that the nominee has to be within the 50 U.S. states which means she's not eligible. I don't want to be grubbing for votes for myself but if people would nominate/vote for me as a representative of Manos Por Patas, ultimately the benefit would of course go to the dogs at the beach and bring some light onto the horrible conditions of animals in Puerto Rico. (To nominate me as a representative of Manos Por Patas, you need the following information:

Take a look at our Cooper boy! He was rescued almost two years ago and was one of our "basket case" dogs for a while. He took a long time to get socialized and has been growing in leaps and bounds with his family. Last weekend they went camping and they were worried about how Cooper would do - but he did GREAT, as you can see by the pictures!
Thanks to wonderful people who have donated funds for Betsy, she is safe and sound at the vet! Sandra took her to Dr. Reyes yesterday and she does indeed have a broken lower arm. Betsy will have surgery Monday morning to place a pin in her arm and she will stay there until Wednesday to recuperate and then off to foster care until she's ready to fly to the states for adoption.
Sandra has to deal with this every day. This little puppy was dumped at the beach today with a badly broken leg. The poor dog was in obvious pain and not moving much when Sandra found her. She fed her and gave her water but we have too many dogs we're financially responsible to take on this one more. Can anyone please help with her? Or if we could get enough in donations to get her to the vet to repair her broken leg, I can take her here for adoption once she's ready.
Here is Brandon, Frances, Miles and Tanya, who were picked up in the "beach sweep" and taken to animal control where we rescued them, and Gonzo, who was rescued by Sarah. All arrived today and after a looooong day (the van broke down on the way up!) are safe and sound at the Humane Society of the Treasure Coast in Palm City. They all are skinny but otherwise healthy and happy - well, Tanya has heartworm but will be treated at the shelter - and will hopefully find their forever homes quickly. Thank you to Sarah, Barbara, Maria, Bob and Carol for getting these guys here safely.
