Update on sweet Miles
I saw sweet little Miles when I was at the Humane Society of the Treasure Coast today bringing the 4 new dogs. I was concerned because he had been there for over a month and never made it to the adoption floor. Apparently he suffered an injury to his shoulder which the shelter is going to take care of - surgery to the tune of $1,100!!! Once he gets the surgery he will be up for adoption and I'm sure adopted very quickly! Thank you so much to the Humane Society of the Treasure Coast for taking such good care of him and getting him the medical care he needs!
New arrivals in Florida
Today we received 9 dogs and 3 kitties for adoption! Kathy, Riker and Meredith are rescues from the beach that have been in foster care for over a month - they all went to the Humane Society of the Treasure Coast. Little Riker is heartworm positive and the shelter is awesome to take care of his treatment. Little Phoebe is a rescue from Sara, a resident of the island who just can't pass up a puppy in need. Gina's remaining 5 puppies went to Luv-A-Pet, a wonderful organization that works through a network of foster homes. They are happy and running around in the yard and romping just like puppies should be. Three went to Inga at the Adopt-A-Cat Foundation. Two were rescued by Susy and a little white kitten was being kept at Dr. Ramos' office and he asked if we could find a place for him - he has a birth defect where he is missing half his eyelids. Inga was so generous to offer to take him in. Thank you so much to Barbara, Nilsa, Sara, Susy, Humane Society of the Treasure Coast, Luv-A-Pet, Adopt-A-Cat Foundation and special thanks to Mary and Bob.
Another loss
Sandra says " I found this sweet chihuahua dead yesterday. He had been at the beach for less than a month. Apparently, by the track marks, he was hit by a heavy vehicle, like some kind of truck."
5 new angels off the beach!
The wonderful and amazing Chrissy Beckles swooped in and waved her magic wand at the beach and took the beautiful dalmatian girl, a mom with two little babies, and a new puppy that is in bad shape and with a broken leg. I am waiting to hear back from her on how they are doing. Thank you so much to Chrissy, Amanda, and Sandra for saving these angels!
Little dalmatian girl
This little girl is at the beach now. She looks to be a sibling from the two dalmatian babies that were dumped off about a month ago. Chrissy rescued one of the dals but someone had already taken the other one by the time she got there. Is anyone able to help with sponsoring this girl so we can get her off the beach?
5 pups safe
Well, I can't turn away when little guys like this are so defenseless at the beach - so even though we are broke right now, these little ones are safe at Dr. Reyes. They will stay there for a couple of days then go into foster care. We need donations to help cover bills for these guys. We've just had 7 parvo puppies (2 of which we lost) and that's a lot of money to get them through that.
New babies on the beach
Six new babies showed up at the beach. They are all very young - 4-5 weeks old - and starving. They should be with their momma. Is there anyone who can take them in for foster? Also Patches puppies are 2 weeks old now. If anyone can take her and her babies, we'll help how we can.
And they're off...
These beautiful babies just left today to fly to Boston to go up for adoption at the Worcester Animal Rescue League! These 5 plus 2 others (Lannie and Lala) were rescued about 6 weeks ago from the beach. Lannie and Lala already have placement in Chicago and they'll be heading up there soon. Thank so much to Maritza and Nilsa for making this trip happen.
Sad news
Sweet little Janice was rescued with that horrible mange. Her skin was improving but her little body just couldn't handle anymore stress - and she came down with parvo. She was just too weak to fight it off and she died this weekend. We did everything we could for her, she was just already so compromised from the horrible condition she was in when she was rescued. But at least she died with a full belly and in a warm bed.
Update on Darwin aka Radar
I thought everyone would like to see an update on precious Darwin. He was adopted by a family and is in doggie heaven! They renamed him "Radar" because of his huge ears. He's a sweet snuggle bug and he's a lucky dog! He went through a bad time with his skin in foster care and seems to be having some little problems still - may have to struggle with that for life - but his family adores him and is totally prepared to care for him no matter what! Here's the email from the new family: We're just writing to update you on Radar (previously known as Darwin). He's such a wonderful little guy.. house broken almost immediately, healthy appetite and growing quickly! When we adopted him he was 8lbs 6oz and his weight today was 11lbs 5oz. He is such a snugglebug. One of his favorite things is to curl up with us on the floor or the couch and take a nap. As a matter of fact, he's currently curled up on my lap while I'm typing, haha. He plays well and even returns everything we throw for him! He can "sit" and "come" on command and is working hard on "down" and "stay." He likes taking walks around the neighborhood and has such good leash manners for a youngster! We love him very much.. he has made a great addition to our little family
The only problem we have with him at the moment is his itchy skin. He scratches and chews at his legs, feet, and back often.. He had some scabbing and dry skin when he came to us, so we think it may have something to do with that. We're currently giving him some omegas for his coat and benedryl for the itching. The vet is helping us figure out how to make him more comfy... we see some improvements, so hopefully we're on the right track!
I've attached some pictures so you can see how he's grown and that he seems to be enjoying his new home! Thank you so much for rescuing him and sending him up to us. We're so happy to have him! We can send more pictures as he gets older if you are interested. Thanks again!
Kitty needs help
This poor kitty needs help. Sandra has seen him on the side of the road near the beach and he looks very sick though he's sweet. Can anyone take him in? We have no money to take any more rescues so someone would need to take him on.
Janice is getting better
Little Janice has been in vet care for almost 3 weeks and is looking so much better! She's getting bigger but is still very skinny - I don't know why our guys always come out so skinny from this vet. We're trying to get her to a foster home ASAP once I get the "all clear" from the vet on whether she's still contagious or not.
Update on Gina's puppies
Well all of Gina's little ones came down with a mild strain of parvovirus. Unfortunately little Gino didn't make it but the other 5 are doing well - eating fine and pooping normally. They will stay with Dr. Ramos for a couple more days before going back to their foster home. We are planning on sending them all here next week for adoption.
Alyssa finally got adopted!!!!!
The beautiful Alyssa finally found her perfect forever home! She was rescued in July 2008 as a pregnant mommy. Her puppies were not viable due to a transmissible venereal tumor (TVT) she had which is basically a doggie STD that is cancer. The puppies were euthanized during a spay and then Alyssa had 6 weeks of chemotherapy to rid her body of the cancer. She arrived in Florida for foster care in December 2008 and has been in boarding since then. No one could understand why this precious girl could not find the right home. She is very quiet and reserved - doesn't jump up on you and demand attention - so it seems the other adoptables were beating her out when potential adopters came. Alyssa took her time, knowing one day the right home would come along. Six long months later, it did. I took her to her new home yesterday with Lori and Dylan in Okeechobee, Florida. Lori was looking for a special dog for her grandson Dylan because he has ADHD and needed a calm and gentle dog that would not fuel his "activity fire", so to speak. When Dylan met Alyssa he fell in love with her. Alyssa licked his face and was so gentle and calm with him, it was as though it was meant to be. Alyssa has a big back yard to roam in and a screened and covered patio all to her own when no one is home. Dylan can't wait until Alyssa wants to sleep in bed with her but for now, she's just getting adjusted to her new surroundings. When I took Alyssa there, Dylan ran to his bed and called for Alyssa and she hopped right up there with him! She had no accidents in the house her first night and seems to be adjusting very well. It seems to be the perfect placement for her and she will be of great help to Dylan in teaching him responsibility and calmness. Here are pictures of her at the beach and at her great new home. Alyssa is one of the most wonderful dogs I've ever met and I know she will be very happy now forever - and will make a little boy very happy as well.
Patches is a mommy
Patches is raising her little angels in the lovely filth of Dead Dog Beach. Those poor babies need to get out of there but we have no money and no foster homes where they can go. If anyone can rescue them on their own, I'll help however I can.
Update on some of the dogs in foster care
Everyone is doing fine. Little Flora, one of Gina's babies, actually presented with Parvovirus which is very bad. So far, none of the other puppies is having problems and Dr. Ramos says she has a very mild strain and she should be fine in a couple of days. Betsy, the little girl with the broken leg, has had some complications from her orthopedic surgery. Apparently she was taking her cast off in foster care and didn't get the medications she needed. Dr. Ramos has her on anti-inflammatories and antibiotics and will take the sutures and pins out in a couple of days. Hopefully she'll be ready to go soon because she already has a home in Chicago! Sweet Gina was spayed today which was no problem - and Dr. Ramos removed a mammary mass from her - he said he didn't believe it was cancer so she should be just fine. And cute boy Spot has a lump on his neck that his foster mom is concerned about - he's going in to the vet today to get it checked out. Riker and Meredith had been at Dr. Vasquez in boarding with Stephanie and Kass but Barbara picked those two up today for foster care at her home. Also little Janice, the girl with such horrible mange, is still in care with Dr. Reyes. She needs to stay there about another 5 days because she is still contagious to other dogs and can't go into foster care like that. With all of this - 26 dogs in total on our tab - we are desperate for donations. I have over $3,000 in vet and boarding bills just for the dogs in Puerto Rico - and another $3,000 in the same here in Florida. I know times are tough - I'm actually a statistic of the economic woes as I was laid off from my job in February - but these bills still have to be paid. I feel so guilty keeping the wonderful foster homes and vets who help us on the line for their services. If you can donate anything - even - $20 or even $10 - it will add up quickly and we can get everyone paid off.
Update from Rocket and Buddy!
Can you believe this is Rocket and Buddy (formerly Ares and Alexander) from the famous beach 6-pack?!?! Are they not the most gorgeous dogs you've ever seen?!?! And they totally hit the jackpot with a home. Here's their latest letter (I'm sure their mommy, Rosalinda, helped them type it!). Greetings from North Aurora, IL!
Hi everyone! This is Buddy & Rocket Torres from the beloved 6-Pack, found in October 2008! Well, it's been 3 months since we last touched base, and we thought write you a quick note, now that things are thawing out here in Chicago, and spring has finally arrived! Mama & Papa & "Jawee" & Baby J.T. have been SUPER busy cleaning us up all the time, because of all the mud we bring in from the backyard now that the snow has melted! But no worries --- they are on top of it, and working as team to ensure we are taking care of all day long! The doc says we weigh approximately 40 pounds now, and we are really healthy and active and happy puppies! Of course, I wouldn't expect anything different ... our family give us about 1,000 kisses every day, and lots of belly rubs, tasty treats, healthy food, vegetables, and a bunch of TLC! We love it! We love them as much as they love us!
Attached please find some of our latest pictures! We hope you like them! Mama loves taking pictures and videos of us --- she says we are the most beautiful dogs in the world, a gift from our Heavenly Father! And I say, she and our new family, and all our rescuers in Puerto Rico & Florida, are the most beautiful people we have ever met! We owe our great life to you!
We promise to send more pictures as the summer progresses, because we have lots of plans to go fishing, camping, hiking and more! We can't wait!
We love you! Please continue to take care of our puppy friends in Puerto Rico ~ we hope that one day, they are as blessed as we've been! Thank you for all you do.
Two more mommies
Sandra says Patches and Luna are pregnant. We haven't had money to get these girls - and so many other - rescued or even in for sterilization to release back to the beach. I'm not sure how far along they are but if anyone can take in a mommy with puppies, please let me know. We'll cover the costs.
