We are so thankful that so many homeless
dogs and cats are getting to the U.S. and into loving homes. However,
there is also great cost associated with this process. Once a dog
or cat is rescued from the beach the animal must remain in foster
care, a kennel, or a veterinarian’s office for 21 days before
it can be transported off the island. Boarding fees vary and foster
homes are often hard to come by. The animals must also be given
a health certificate by a veterinarian before they can leave the
island. That includes a full check-up by the vet, all of their vaccinations
(including rabies), heartworm testing, tests for and removal of
internal and external parasites (including mange), spay or neuter,
and any other tests or treatments the vet deems necessary. Then
they board a plane and are flown to the U.S., picked up by volunteers
there, and taken to a shelter. The average cost for a dog or cat
to be boarded for 21 days, receive all necessary veterinary services,
and be flown to the U.S. is $200.
At present, volunteers are using their
own money and whatever small donations we can come up with to get
these dogs and cats to a safe and happy place. Please donate whatever
you can to help these animals. |
